The difference between bid and ask — the built-in cost of every round trip.
Prop accounts quote raw-ish spreads plus commission or wider spreads with none; both models price the same cost differently. Scalping strategies live and die on this number.
Spreads widen violently around news — an entry 'at market' in that window pays multiples of the normal cost.
